Meet The Maker

Hello, fellow guitar enthusiast

My name is Merrick Newell, and I’m the founder of Viridis Guitars. I was born in 1996 and raised on the outskirts of Toronto, Ontario. As the son of a carpenter and musician, two truths shaped my childhood: there’s always something to build, and there’s always music to enjoy. These lessons sparked a lifelong passion for creating and a deep appreciation for music.

I began woodworking at just seven years old, helping my father with projects around the house. Whether it was building furniture or crafting chessboards, the process of turning an idea into something tangible captured my imagination. Our soundtrack was always the stereo, and the rhythm of music made every project feel magical. These early experiences gave me an enduring love for craftsmanship and artistry.

In high school, I had the opportunity to work with a cabinet maker during a co-op placement. It was my first deep dive into fine woodworking, and I quickly realized I wanted to combine the intricacy of woodworking with my love for music. That realization led me to Tugaske, Saskatchewan, where I studied guitar making under renowned luthier David Freeman at Timeless Instruments.

My time with David was transformative. I not only refined my woodworking skills but also gained a profound understanding of the physics behind crafting guitars that look, feel, and sound exceptional. When I completed the program, I knew I was ready to dedicate myself to building bespoke instruments that reflect my two greatest passions—woodworking and music.

At Viridis Guitars, I strive to create instruments that inspire musicians while honoring the ecosystems that provide our materials. By using only non-endangered woods and prioritizing sustainability, my goal is to build guitars that not only play beautifully but also reflect a respect for the world we share.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a bit about me and my journey. I look forward to crafting an instrument that becomes a meaningful part of your own musical story.
